Sunigator a.k.a. “The Claw” is perhaps the most popular and widely bootlegged figure from the 1980’s M.U.S.C.L.E. toy line. Very little is known however of the character’s actual origin story as the Kinnikuman comic and cartoon were never released in the USA. The toys were released overseas without names or background stories. As such, the inspiration for this piece was to turn the concept of bootlegging on its head. Rather than focusing on the familiar form of the claw (without an origin story), I chose to focus primarily on the origin story itself. This figure was painstakingly constructed using vintage pages from the original Kinnikuman manga. The panels chosen represent the story arch and origin of the character. The pages were then applied by hand using paintbrush and glue via decoupage technique.
